Relaxing in Half Moon Bay

A cruising sailboat sits at anchor in a large, calm harbor beneath blue skies and whispy clouds. Several other boats are anchored behind her.

After finally getting Luna Moth back out on the ocean, and sailing south to Half Moon Bay, we decided to just relax for a few days and enjoy our first calm anchorage. We had visited the town a couple of times before by car, but this time we enjoyed it at a different pace, soaking in the daily life of the town more.

We were there for Labor Day weekend, which happened to coincide with the Half Moon Bay Yacht Club’s big annual cruise in. The club was a great host and we were welcomed for drinks and their (vegetarians look away) big pig roast dinner. Tiffany threw down and sang karaoke and made friends with a sweet Chihuahua puppy (sorry Elby and Tulip, she still loves you both).

We of course did a tour of the local coffee shops, The Press was the best with excellent pumpkin spice lattes and friendly staff. While we have the goal of catching fish as we cruise, we also want to make it a point to support local fisherman, so one afternoon we bought a Rock Fish from a fisherman on the docks. Still learning to filet, Lisa paid a professional to do it, getting a lesson in the process. Later we made fresh fish tacos.

When we were in hard core project mode, preparing to cruise, Tiffany would often keep Lisa motivated by dangling the carrot of getting Oysters Rockefeller at Sam’s Chowder House, an experience she enjoyed years before when visiting by car. We definitely had to partake!

In total we spent about a week in Half Moon Bay, enjoying the nice weather and the people we met there.
